ECCT IPR Committee Hosts IP Court President Kao Hsiow-Jen, Jan. 13, in Taipei |

On Jan. 13, 2009, Eiger Law partner John Eastwood chaired a session of the European Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (ECCT) IPR Committee featuring special guest speaker Kao Hsiow-Jen, the president of Taiwan's new IP Court and an experienced judge with more than 30 years with the Judicial Yuan. In her presentation, President Kao talked about the structure and caseload of the court, as well as the technical experts assigned to the court. Following her presentation, President Kao took questions from the audience of ECCT members. It was a very rare opportunity to hear from a key Judicial Yuan official on topics of major interest.

Eiger Law Participates in BCCT Christmas Fundraising Auction to Benefit the SOS Children’s Village |

Eiger Law contributed bottles of Swiss brandy and partner John Eastwood served as one of the auctioneers for the annual British Chamber of Commerce Taipei's Christmas Fundraising Auction. Through the auction, TWD 600,000 was raised for the SOS Children's Village in Taoyuan.
The SOS Children's Village was founded in 1971 to care for orphans and abandoned babies, and in 1991 its mandate expanded to include care for abused and emotionally troubled children. Funds raised for the SOS Children's Village at the BCCT's 2007 auction were used to construct a computer room, undertake kitchen repairs to additional housing units and help cover school tuition fees for the children. BCCT members and their families have also been active in visiting the SOS Children's Village to help with dance classes, art programs, gardening and other programs.

Overseas Income Included in Alternative Minimum Tax Starting 2010 |

The Executive Yuan recently decided that beginning on January 1, 2010, individual overseas income exceeding NT$1 million per year will be listed in the taxpayer's basic income, along with income earned in Taiwan, non-cash gifts, non-taxable income payments, employee stock dividends, and income from non-listed stocks, and will be subject to the alternative minimum tax. This includes income on securities investment, land transactions, and bank interest.
